K-State Core is the foundation for an impactful life and career after time at K-State.
The K-State Core framework covers six disciplinary areas: English, Communications, Mathematics & Statistics, Natural & Physical Sciences, Social & Behavioral Sciences, and Arts and Humanities. In addition, a seventh area is reserved for institutionally designated use, which K-State is keeping as free electives. In total, the framework takes up 34-35 credit hours of 100 and 200-level coursework. Students who complete their general education elsewhere cannot be required to take additional general education coursework in the disciplinary areas of the framework without permission from KBOR to continue requiring courses in the K-State Core.

A Specialty may be defined in generally any focus area. Typically, all 15 credit hours are from the same department/field, however, it can be possible to use credits from multiple closely-aligned fields; students should work with their advisor in defining their Specialty and courses. A Specialty will consist of 15 total credit hours with a minimum of 3 hours 300-level or above, and 6 hours 500-level or above. (Minors, Certificates, Modern Languages, and Accounting are exempt from the course level requirement.) Specialty areas may include but are not limited to political science, computer science, nutrition, journalism, statistics, animal science, agronomy, grain science, accounting, finance, business, leadership, various modern languages, pre-veterinary medicine, pre-law, natural resources and environmental sciences, and agricultural communications.
